Project Summary | Ultra-Low Energy Neighborhood
Concord Riverwalk is a progressive cluster
development of 10 new homes and 2 major
renovations in a walkable neighborhood setting.
The developer, NOW Communities, asked ZED to
design the HVAC systems for the homes.
The mechanical design needed to match the high
performance building envelope modeled by Marc
Rosenbaum. Ultra-low energy consumption as a
baseline was the target with net zero energy
performance for some of the homes. The 'rightsized'
ducted air source heat pumps and HRVs provide exceptional comfort and excellent indoor air quality with reduced energy consumption. Solar thermal panels produce ~75%
of the required heat for hot water, with the
balance provided by an electric hot water tank.
The all-electric HVAC and hot water solution
is easily upgradable to net zero energy, offers
reduced system installation costs for the
developer, and lower ongoing operating costs for
the new homeowners. Architecture by Donald
Powers Architects, Inc. |

Project Summary | Low Energy Affordable Housing
ZeroEnergy Design and FreeGreen were jointly selected as National Finalists in the U.S. Green Building Council's 2010 Natural Talent Design Competition. As a National Finalist, their green, LEED Platinum home, designed for the post-Hurricane Katrina rebuilding effort, will be built in the Broadmoor neighborhood of New Orleans.
The USGBC, in collaboration with the Salvation Army’s EnviRenew, challenged contestants to design an 800-square-foot LEED Platinum home that embraced the New Orleans Broadmoor neighborhood, functioned well for elderly occupants, and minimized construction and operating costs. ZeroEnergy Design and FreeGreen collaborated on the architecture and specifications for “Little Easy”, which was selected by a panel of prestigious judges as one of four national finalists.
Each national finalist’s home design is being built in New Orleans and monitored during a measurement and verification phase during which each are being evaluated on energy efficiency, water reuse and indoor air quality among other categories. The design team whose home performs best during measurement and verification will be awarded the final grand prize at Greenbuild 2011 International Conference & Expo. |

Project Summary | High Performance Homes
Five Lanterns is a luxury housing neighborhood at
The Pinehills in Plymouth, MA. The developer and
builder, The Green Company, asked ZED to provide
energy efficiency recommendations and design the
HVAC systems for the homes. The mechanical design/layout
needed to be adaptable to different customer-selected
building options. Efficient and cost effective selections
were made to both reduce utility bills and gain
efficiencies of scale over numerous buildings. The
'rightsized' systems also reduced the first installation
cost of the system as well as the ongoing operating
costs. Cooperative efforts led to one of the best
Energy Star ratings yet achieved by the builder.
ZED also led a seminar for the Green Company's sales
team that served as a primer to green building,
energy efficiency, and where the Five Lanterns homes
fell in the spectrum. Selected by Boston magazine
as the Design Home 2008, the homes also received
5 national design awards including Best in North
Atlantic Region award from the 2008 Best in American
Living Awards. |

Project Summary | Low Energy Home
The 100k House is an affordable housing project
in Philadelphia, PA. The developer's concept was
to build urban-infill, two-bedroom homes targeting
LEED Platinum certification with only a $100,000
construction budget. With cost effectiveness being
paramount for the project, ZED developed energy
efficiency recommendations that reduced the home's
energy use by 44%. An optional package with a slightly
higher construction cost produced higher performance
and included a solar thermal system. |
