Our Unique Approach To Sustainability
At ZED, sustainability is not an optional checkbox, rather a deeply-ingrained principle that impacts our environmental considerations, our use of design to solve challenges, and our design process:
Environmental Considerations:
- Energy – Our firm is committed to design homes and buildings to use at least 50% less energy than minimum code requirements. We also help clients to reach higher levels of aggressive performance standards, such as Passive House and, the firm’s namesake and expertise, zero energy.
- Materials and Durability – Most building failures (whether peeling paint, mold growth, or rot) are a result of moisture-related infiltration into the building. Long-term durability relies on how the building manages heat flow, air-flow, moisture, and water. ZED’s building science experts specify climate-specific construction details to mitigate against these risks.
- Water – ZED designs baths and kitchens that are both beautiful and water efficient.
- Air Quality – Maintaining positive indoor air quality is vital to occupant health. ZED’s mechanical engineer designs ventilation solutions to ensure exchanges of stale indoor and fresh outdoor air.
Innovative Design
ZED uses design to solve clients’ challenges, particularly those that may seem diametrically opposed. These may be programmatic goals (such as accommodating widely varying occupancies) or energy goals (such as low energy home with a west facing view).
Multi-Disciplinary Design Process
ZED integrates architecture, engineering, and finance disciplines into an iterative design process that refines a design concept to achieve programmatic/aesthetic goals, low energy performance, and financial viability.
Design tools such as 3D modeling and rendering allow ZED to better communicate ideas clients, which results in the ability to make better decisions. Energy modeling tools enable design decisions to be quantified by energy consumption and financial cost.
