While Passive House design is the norm for ZED’s own architecture projects, the firm also provides Passive House Consulting services for other architects, building owners, developers, and homeowners seeking exceptional energy performance - with the option of targeting PHI or PHIUS+ certification.

PROJECT BUILDING TYPES

High-performance residential buildings - single-family homes, multifamily buildings, and faculty housing - are our specialty. Our firm is focused on net zero or net positive energy performance, and our team includes some of the earliest Certified Passive House Consultants in the US. ZED offers expertise in several building types and will also consider project opportunities outside these use types.

  • Single Family Homes

  • Multifamily Buildings

  • Institutional RESIDENTIAL Buildings

SUPPORTING SERVICES

Building Science Consulting

Building science addresses heat, air, and moisture flow and how they impact a structure. Potential problems that result from thermal bridging, condensation, and/or moisture accumulation, such as mildew/mold growth and building decay can be avoided using ZED services for wall/roof section development, condensation risk analysis, air barrier detailing, thermal bridge calculations and analysis, and critical construction details.

Certification Facilitation

PASSIVE HOUSE and PHIUS+
To complement the firm’s Passive House consulting services, ZED offers the option of facilitating adherence to energy certification programs such as the international Passive House Institute’s Passive House standard and the Passive House Institute US’s PHIUS+ standard. Facilitation typically includes plan review for compliance, detailed energy modeling for certification, performance measurement, required site inspections, and paperwork submission.

MECHANICAL DESIGN (HVAC)

ZED provides mechanical design for heating, cooling, and ventilation systems for high-efficiency homes and small multifamily buildings. Accurate load calculations, equipment sizing and specification, and distribution system design result in a right-sized system, lower equipment costs, longer equipment life, increased energy performance, lower utility bills, and greater occupant comfort. BENEFITS OF PASSIVE HOUSE

There are several benefits to Passive House design. Shelter for the occupants from rising energy costs is provided by a building envelope that requires a fraction of the heating and cooling energy consumed by a typical new building. Thermal comfort is maximized by eliminating drafts and temperature differentials throughout the building. The super insulated structure also helps with noise attenuation by mitigating any surrounding outdoor noise pollution. Additionally, a smaller investment in mechanical systems is required than in most buildings. Overall, the carbon footprint is greatly reduced when compared to a typical building. And finally, the reduced utility costs can benefit the building owner or occupants.
