Powisset Net Positive Barn

The Powisset Farm includes a restored farming operation on 108 acres, a Community Supported Agriculture program, and the newly renovated Powisset Barn, all managed by  The Trustees of Reservations. Within the existing 6000SF unconditioned barn shell, ZED designed a new 1800SF super-insulated conditioned space for agricultural teaching, cooking demonstrations, offices, and general year round CSA facilitation.

  • PROGRAM. The Trustees, as with all their property revitalizations, sought to maximize sustainability, functionality, and achieve operational net zero carbon status. A central multi-purpose space enables informative presentations, planned gatherings, and abuts the distribution area for weekly CSA shares. Connected to the space is a commercial kitchen for cooking demonstrations using food grown on the farm. Offices and ADA accessible bathrooms complete the operational aspects.

FRESH USE OF OLD. The existing timber frame from the early 1800s remained in place and received a carefully air-sealed continuous thermal envelope constructed by Stack + Co. Oversized sliding barn doors were updated to become part of the new super-insulation solution.

NET POSITIVE ENERGY. The super insulated building envelope greatly reduced the energy requirements, while the efficient HVAC mechanical equipment (air source heat pumps and ERV), kitchen appliances (such as an induction cooktop), and high efficacy LED lighting ensure efficient energy consumption. On the barn rooftop, production from 25kW solar electric system makes the agricultural/commercial space net positive energy, and yields excess renewable energy for use elsewhere on the farm. A new root cellar provides long-term, low energy food storage through out the year.
