This Oregon-based client decided to set up a permanent residence in Central Maine to be closer to friends and family. With deep roots in the area since childhood, the land chosen was the essence of what Maine meant to the couple. They sought a new home that took advantage of their lakefront view and juxtaposed a rustic exterior and modern interior.
On the approach to the house, it blends seamlessly into the local vernacular with its natural shiplap wood siding and casement and awning windows, while a covered porch reveals the front door with sidelight windows. The entry provides a walk-off space to remove dirt, dust, and shoes as one enters the house and includes easy laundry access for muddy clothes and a half bathroom. From there the space opens into the great room including a full kitchen with breakfast bar and a double height space for both living and dining. The far wall features custom casework for books, a stone fireplace, and a wood burning insert. Views of the lake are available throughout the great room, as well as from the attached screened porch, which provides a protected outdoor dining area and is easily accessed from the kitchen.
A master suite on the first floor provides lifelong accessibility and features a water view, a walk-in closet, a full bath, and a private deck area. A pocket door reveals an intimate study space with built in shelving and more views of the lake. On the second floor, two bedrooms share a full bathroom and loft space for watching television. Since the lot slopes toward the lake, ZED included a walkout basement to accommodate a children's playroom and easy access to and storage for recreational equipment such as canoes and kayaks.
